Of all the countries in the world, Italy is perhaps the most magical of all. This narrow boot of crinkled land, extending gracefully into the warm waters of the Mediterranean Sea, has seen the birth of empires, cradled the growth of civilisations and shaped the destinies of continents. The great artistic legacy of Italy, unequalled anywhere in the world, is not only distributed throughout the major cities and their famous museums; one can say in truth that there is no Italian city, however modest, which does not contain and cherish some share of this wealth of art. Additionally, Italy is home to a very interesting ancient-meets-modern architecture, where old castles meet modern hotels and magnificent villas meet fantastic luxury spas. Finally, it is impossible to speak of Italy without addressing the ancient city of Rome. Today, Rome is a land rich with both ancient history and architecture and all of the amenities and comforts of a fully-developed city.
Coastal areas and the islands are great year round, although July and August can be very hot. The arts and opera seasons are generally at their peak outside these months. August is very much a shut down month as Italians take their annual break.
